SUMMARY:Religious Diversity After Dobbs v. Jackson
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Interfaith Center of NE Florida\nKey Question: What is impact of Dobbs v. Jackson on multiple faith traditions?\n\n\n“For decades, antiabortion Catholic and evangelical Christian perspectives have dominated the religious conversation around abortion. But people of faith hold a variety of views on the issue, rooted in their own traditions, teachings, and laws.” –Los Angeles Times, July 27, 2022\nOver the summer, WJCT hosted a panel of local religious leaders about reproductive health and their religious beliefs in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. All panelists were Christian clergy except for one, who was placed in a room by himself where he could not interact with the others, which made it feel like an afterthought to add the perspective on abortion from a different religion. Such assumptions about what religious diversity looks like actually hide the true religious diversity of northeast Florida. It also assumes that debates within Christian circles are the primary ones, if not the only ones, that matter. One of our missions at the Interfaith Center of Northeast Florida is to promote Interfaith Literacy, and with the issue of reproductive rights, further education is needed in our community if we all hope to better understand the variety of faith traditions, and their beliefs and debates, around the issue of abortion. Join us as we begin this conversation on Tuesday evening, November 1st, at 6:30p.m. at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. That evening, we will be hosting a panel discussion on reproductive health including religious leaders from a variety of faith traditions in our community. There will be group discussion and fellowship to follow.\nThis event is free, but please RSVP here.\n\n\n
